"Homage to Jack Shadbolt"

In this painting, Hodnett pays homage to Jack Shadbolt, one of Canada's great painters.  Hodnett met Shadbolt less than a year after arriving in Canada. Although extremely frail and in failing health, Shadbolt took the time to look at Hodnett's work, discuss "matters art" and enthusiastically introduce the artist's work to a leading gallery in Vancouver. Jack Shadbolt died in 1998.

In appreciation of this and other generous gestures by both Jack and Doris Shadbolt (see: Doris Shadbolt Voluntarism), Hodnett felt it fitting to pay homage to "a painter's Painter of immense importance and the Great Lady who's dedication and support made it all happen".
