This small painting was one of the first works Hodnett painted after arriving in Canada. The devastation often caused by clearcut forestry practices in British Columbia affected the artist tremendously and is a theme he revisits in a later painting entitled "Vancouver Island Clearcut" (see: Image Gallery 10).
